16 June 2015 AUSRALIA HELPS TIARO BAY IMPROVE VEGETABLE PRODUCTION AND LEAD HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
The Australian Government has helped the Tiaro Bay community improve their diets and generate income through funding from the Direct Aid Program (DAP).
The Tiaro Bay Women’s Farm Tools Project has provided 30 families with farming tools to develop a sustainable, self-sufficient agricultural group. In addition to the funding, Australia worked with the Kastom Gaden Association to provide much needed training to the community on effective tool usage and farming skills.
DAP Manager, Lisa Chadderton, and Second Secretary, Nicole Hirst, visited Tiaro Bay on Monday to see how the farm tools have transformed food production in the area.
“Eating a wide variety of healthy foods promotes good health and helps prevent chronic disease,” said Ms Chadderton.
“It’s great to see how the Direct Aid Program can help communities like Tiaro Bay to reach their healthy living goals by providing the resources needed to produce better quality vegetables and boost vegetable production.”
The Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program aims to improve livelihoods in some of Solomon Islands’ most remote and disadvantaged areas. Application forms can be collected from the Australian High Commission in Mud Alley or by email [email protected] .
