Australia funds Divit Rural Training Center, Fresh Water Prawn and Tilapia Ponds Project
The Australian High Commission has provided Direct Aid Program funding of SBD $50,000 to the Divit Rural Training Centre, located at Visale, North West Guadalcanal.
"The Australian Government is pleased to support Divit’s project, one that will provide new skills and knowledge in aquaculture farming to sixty female students", said Australian High Commissioner, Rod Brazier. "It is also inspiring to see women taking a leading role in developing this farming project for the rural training center".
The project is part of the new livelihood skills training for young women, which will start this year with training in fish farming provided by #worldfish under the Ministry of Agriculture. The harvest of fish and prawns under the project will be used as food and income for the school.
The Divit school was established in the1950s by the Catholic Church and is managed by the Sisters of the church. Divit offers training in life skills by providing young women with farming and gardening skills, home economic and management skills, and secretarial courses. Divit training centre recruits young females from the rural areas of Solomon Islands.
The Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program aims to improve livelihoods in some of Solomon Islands’ most remote and disadvantaged areas. Application forms can be collected from the Australian High Commission in Mud Alley or by emailing [email protected].
