International Women’s Day
Today marks International Women’s Day – a day to reflect on the progress that has been made to date in advancing gender equality, as well as that which remains to be done.
‘Australia is a firm supporter of efforts to advance gender equality in Solomon Islands’, said Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Rod Brazier.
‘I was proud to march alongside colleagues, Solomon Islands Government, private sector representatives, civil society, development partners and men and women in the annual parade through Honiara this morning to demonstrate my commitment.
‘And I was honoured to speak on gender equality at the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry International Women’s Day business breakfast on Tuesday.
Australia is a long-time supporter of efforts to end violence against women, promote women’s economic empowerment and facilitate women’s leadership and decision-making in Solomon Islands.
‘Last year we made some strong gains. For example, Australia launched a new, $2.3 million initiative with the International Finance Corporation to break down barriers to women’s formal employment in-country,’ continued High Commissioner Brazier.
‘This year, I had the honour of recognising the work of the Honiara and Auki Market Vendors Associations with a High Commissioner’s Award for their leadership and inclusive decision-making for market vendors in Solomon Islands.
‘And I am also pleased to announce that Australia will be supporting the provision of leadership and management training for Solomon Islands women working for government and civil society in 2017 and 2018 through the Australia Pacific Technical College.
Australia will continue to invest in gender equality in Solomon Islands well into the foreseeable future, recognising that advancing gender equality and empowering women will be central to the country’s continued growth and development.
